Watering Schedules

Every plant is different. Even in the same species, pots, etc, each plant will absorb a different amount of water. I used to think that all plants are the same but that is when I fail as a plant mom. I have learned that water meters are key, rain water is always best although not always readily available, and some plants just absorb more love than others. Light is a big part of the equation so depending on what side of the house your plant sits on or if there are grow lights closer to it, pot size, soil mixture, how long its been is its particular soil mixture, all play a factor. Although you can keep track of everything for every plant, here are some helpful tips I have learned over the last few years. Aroid soil is great, however, if you buy a plant from a big box store, I have learned, you want to repot as soon as possible. Most plant their plants in cheap, dense soil which results in root rot or other fungus and diseases. Check the moisture/water level at least twice a week. I usually choose Sundays and Wednesdays just out of ease of schedule. Fertilize in the growing months which typically are late spring to early fall. If the plant seems to be drooping or just not looking well and yet the water meter says it’s fine……the plant probably has a root issue. This could be from the soil mix getting old or the roots were sitting in water for so long that they are starting to rot or an abundance of other issues. This week I am going to try and save a monstera plant that I purchased at a store in Tulsa and convert it from being fully potted to a hydroponic medium and see if it comes back to life. More photos and stories once I complete the transformation.
